The New York Jets will bench Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of Geno Smith, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.
The news comes two days after Fitzpatrick’s horrid performance on Monday Night Football where he went 16 of 31 for 174 yards and an interception. Smith saw game action in the fourth, but similarily struggled going 4 of 6 for 31 yards and a pick.
Prior to the 2015 season, Smith was in line to be the starter for the Jets before having his jaw broken by former teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali in a preseason locker room dispute. Fitzpatrick went on to have a franchise record 31 TDs while only throwing 15 interceptions to lead the Jets to a 10-6 record, only narrowly missing the playoffs.
The Jets currently sit at 1-5 with little to no hope of a playoff birth. Smith was draft 39th overall in the 2013 draft under the Rex Ryan regime. Largely touted to be the most promising QB of the much maligned draft class, only EJ Manuel was drafted ahead of Smith in the middle of the first round by the Buffalo Bills.
Smith showed flashes of promise in his early years, but inconsistency held the sporadic passer back. However, we have yet to see the 26-year-old under offensive guru Chan Gailey. Consider the rest of the season Smith’s tryout to move forward with a front office with no attachment to the potential bust.
